Chicago Cubs’ Rotation Fix Might Have to Wait — Sandy Alcantara Off the Table for Now

MLB Rumors: Chicago Cubs’ Rotation Fix Might Have to Wait — Sandy Alcantara Off the Table for Now

The Miami Marlins are almost certainly going to trade Sandy Alcantara—it’s just a matter of when. But if the Chicago Cubs were hoping to swoop in early, they may have to put those plans on ice.

In a crowded NL East featuring juggernauts like the Phillies, Braves, and even the big-spending Mets, the Marlins are firmly in rebuild mode. And for a small-market franchise, that often means dealing away stars like Alcantara before their value dips or payroll tightens further.

But here’s the catch: they’re not ready to sell just yet.

Alcantara Isn’t Rushing Out of Miami

Coming off Tommy John surgery, the 2022 NL Cy Young winner is under contract through 2027 on a team-friendly deal—making him a high-upside trade chip. The Marlins are wisely betting that his value will rise by the July trade deadline, especially if he finds a groove on the mound this summer.

And Alcantara isn’t pushing to leave either. “I want to play here and win here,” he told Miami reporters. “This team gave me an opportunity to be a starting pitcher and be a superstar. I signed here to stay here.”

Cubs Need Pitching Help—But the Clock’s Ticking

The Cubs’ rotation took a major hit when Justin Steele was ruled out for the season following surgery on his left UCL. While Shota Imanaga has been stellar, asking him to carry the rotation alone is a tall order.

Chicago has the farm system to get a deal done for Alcantara, and his contract wouldn’t crush the payroll—something ownership would certainly appreciate. But according to Bob Nightengale (USA Today), the Marlins aren’t rushing into anything, no matter how eager the Cubs may be.

Deadline Dreams

In all likelihood, this is a wait-and-see situation. The Marlins are playing the long game, hoping a bidding war breaks out in July. And the Cubs? They'll have to stay in contention and keep their chips ready in case Alcantara becomes available down the stretch.

Until then, Cubs fans might have to cross their fingers and hope for some magic from the rest of the staff—or a surprise move elsewhere.
