MLB Runors: The latest on Pete Alonso, Alex Bregman's free-agent marrkets
With players like Tanner Scott and Jurickson Profar leaving the board this week, free agency is heating up. However, the list of players who were still unsigned as of January 24 is highlighted by Pete Alonso and Alex Bregman.
There have been rumors circulating, particularly regarding Alonso. What is and is not real? Let's get started.
Pete Alonso
Here is what we know: Alonso is not and has not been close to signing, despite rumors to the contrary. A deal with the Toronto Blue Jays has not gained any traction.
We now know that Alonso is a target for the Blue Jays. He is liked by them. Together with Anthony Santander and Vladimir Guerrero Jr., they believe his bat would propel the offense into one of the greatest in the American League.
Given that Alonso has hit at least 34 home runs in each complete season since 2019, they have every reason to believe so.
Alonso, 30, just finished a season with a.240/.329/.459 batting line, 34 home runs, and 88 RBI. He seems destined for a short-term deal at this point in the offseason, which would enable him to test free agency the following season.
How may the remainder of Alonso's market appear? Although it's unclear when the most recent talks have happened, the Mets are still participating. And I won't rule out going back to Queens unless Alonso secures a contract elsewhere. Although FanSided has not been able to verify the news, there have been rumors of a meeting with the Los Angeles Angels.
However, until everything changes, it seems very unlikely that Alonso will end up with the Angels.
Alex Bregman
Alex Bregman might be pursued by the Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, and Chicago Cubs.
But for the majority of the teams mentioned above, Bregman might not be very likely. A Bregman addition is quite doubtful since the Cubs lack the flexibility to add a huge contract. Both the Tigers and the Red Sox have not made much headway in their negotiations with the great infielder.
Even after signing Christian Walker, the Astros haven't withdrawn their offer to Bregman. They haven't officially ruled out getting back together with the talented infielder, but it's unclear how likely a signing is. However, if Ryan Pressly's clearance is obtained, a trade to the Cubs is allegedly imminent, which would allow the Astros to add Bregman or another player to their Major League roster.
Bregman's market has a lot of unknowns. However, nothing was in the works as of Friday morning. The Astros might be able to step up their pursuit of Bregman if they were to acquire Pressly. We shall see.
