MLB Rumors: Toronto Blue Jays Reportedly Finalizing $500M Mega-Extension With Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
The Toronto Blue Jays may finally be locking up their franchise cornerstone for the long haul.
According to multiple reports, the Blue Jays are on the verge of signing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a massive contract extension, with an official announcement potentially coming this weekend. MLB insider Héctor Gómez revealed that someone close to Guerrero expects the deal to be finalized soon, ending months of speculation and anxiety for Blue Jays fans.
The Deal: 14-15 Years, Around $500 Million
Insider Jon Heyman recently reported that the expected deal will be in the $500 million range, covering 14 to 15 years, and paying Guerrero over $30 million per season. The extension would ensure the Blue Jays don’t lose their biggest star to free agency this upcoming offseason.
At just 26 years old, Guerrero is entering his prime. While he had a slight dip in production during 2022 and 2023, he bounced back in a major way last season—batting .323 with 30 home runs and 103 RBI, earning his fourth All-Star selection.
Guerrero’s Contract Demands: Less Than Soto, But Still Historic
In a recent interview with ESPN, Guerrero revealed he initially asked for close to $600 million, referencing the Juan Soto deal as a benchmark, but clarified he was willing to be flexible.
“It's much less than Soto. We're talking about many fewer millions than Soto, more than a hundred million less,” Guerrero said.
“I'm looking for 14 [years]. I would like 14, 15, even 20 if they give them to me, but doing it the right way.”
It seems both sides have found common ground around the $500 million mark—still one of the richest contracts in MLB history.
Toronto’s Future Hinges on Vlad Jr.
With Bo Bichette also approaching free agency, the Blue Jays are under pressure to retain at least one of their franchise pillars. While the club hasn’t found playoff success with the Guerrero-Bichette duo yet, Vlad Jr. remains the centerpiece of their offensive identity.
So far in 2025, Guerrero is batting .267 through eight games. He hasn’t hit a home run yet, but he’s expected to heat up as the season progresses.
A Franchise-Defining Moment
If finalized, this extension would be a franchise-altering commitment and a massive statement of intent from Toronto’s front office. It not only locks in a perennial All-Star but also signals to fans and players around the league that the Blue Jays are serious about building a long-term contender.
Stay tuned—Vlad Jr.’s megadeal could become official any day now.
