MLB Rumors: With the signing of an OF, the Toronto Blue Jays finally land a top free agent.
Finally, someone was willing to accept the Toronto Blue Jays' money.
According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, Anthony Santander and the Blue Jays have reached a contract deal. According to KPRC 2 Houston's Ari Alexander, Santander will sign a five-year contract worth at least $92.5 million.
The Blue Jays have made multiple unsuccessful attempts to sign a prominent free agent. According to reports, two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani, outfielder Juan Soto, and pitchers Corbin Burnes and Roki Sasaki had thought about joining the Blue Jays but ultimately chose to sign with another team.
Despite those setbacks, Toronto continued to pursue additional elite free agents. Over the weekend, there were reports that Santander and the Blue Jays were working on a contract.
They were successful in closing the deal this time.
One of the top pure power hitters available, Santander was ranked as the 12th-best free agent by FanGraphs. In his 665 plate appearances last season, he hit 25 doubles and 44 home runs, for a batting line of.235/308/.506. Santander received his first Silver Slugger award and was selected to his first All-Star Game.
There are issues with the Blue Jays' most recent acquisition. His sprint speed puts him in the 18th percentile, making him one of the slowest players in the major leagues. Before his contract expires, he will probably have to be transferred to first base or designated hitter. Additionally, Santander recorded a home run to fly ball percentage of 17.1%, which is probably unsustainable.
Santander adds another potent bat to the lineup in spite of those warning signs. He ought to finish behind Vladimir Guerrero Jr., providing Toronto with a strong third and fourth-place combination. Santander is a fantastic place to start, but the Blue Jays still have work to do if they want to compete in the AL East.
