MLB Trade Rumors: After losing Alex Bregman, the Houston Astros move on to a six-year MLB veteran.
The Houston Astros are adding another Gold Glove infielder after losing Alex Bregman. Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston reports that they have reached an agreement with former Colorado Rockies second baseman Brendan Rodgers to sign a one-year minor league contract. The 28-year-old will soon join his new ballclub in West Palm Beach, Florida, as part of the deal, which includes an invitation to spring training.
Although it goes without saying that Rodgers cannot be considered Bregman's replacement, Alexander does highlight an intriguing similarity between the two players. In the 2015 MLB Amateur Draft, they were chosen consecutively, with Rodgers going one choice later and Bregman going two picks ahead. The No. 5 pick was Kyle Tucker, another star who is no longer with Houston.
Despite his lackluster performance—a.266 batting average, 45 home runs, and a.726 OPS in 452 regular season games for the Rockies—Rodgers has the ability to give the Astros reliable depth. The team could rely on a many of players to man the infield during the 2025 season with Bregman out and Jose Altuve potentially playing in left field. If he can get a spot on the MLB roster, Rodgers is likely to be one of those players.
Will the Astros make it through their major departures?
With three-time Gold Glover Christian Walker taking over at first and All-Star Isaac Paredes settling in at third, the infield corners are very different.
Although the franchise faces obstacles, both moves can keep the Astros in the running for another American League West championship.
In 2024, two-way powerhouse Kyle Tucker hit 23 home runs in 78 games. He now plays for the Chicago Cubs. In eight of his nine years in Houston, two-time World Series champion Alex Bregman helped the team qualify for the postseason. He now plays for the Boston Red Sox. One of the best players the team has ever had is Jose Altuve. In May, he will turn thirty-five.
In what may be a new era of Space City baseball, the younger players on the team may have to take on more responsibility. One of the game's top hitters, Yordan Alvarez, is driven to reach his greatest potential this season. It's possible that Yainer Diaz will be selected as an All-Star for the first time. On Tuesday, Paredes turned 26. Last year, Hunter Brown made significant progress (3.49 ERA in 30 starts).
This club clearly has talent. Stability is what Houston needs. Brendan Rodgers will make an effort to bring that to the clubhouse and field. Spring training is the first step in his effort to establish a position for himself on the revamped Astros.
