MLB Trade Rumors: Arizona Diamondbacks and Geraldo Perdomo agree to large $45 million contract
The Arizona Diamondbacks almost missed the 2024 playoffs the previous season, but their big decision to sign Corbin Burnes to a six-year, $210 million contract shows that they are preparing for another postseason run in 2025. According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Diamondbacks have also agreed to a four-year, $45 million deal extension with shortstop Geraldo Perdomo, indicating that they are taking care of internal issues as Spring Training approaches.
According to Feinsand, Perdomo's new deal with the Diamondbacks, which starts in 2026, may buy out the 25-year-old shortstop's three years of free agency.
Along with incentives in the contract that may increase the worth to $72 million, the Diamondbacks also have a club option for 2030 that could increase the contract's value to $57 million over five years.
Given that he is only 25 years old, this is a great deal for the Diamondbacks for a shortstop who still has many good years remaining in him. In addition to being an All-Star in 2023, Perdomo's bat has only gotten better in recent years. He played his typical strong brand of defense at short and recorded a career-best.718 OPS in 2024 (over the course of a full season).
If Perdomo can hit the escalators in his new contract, his annual compensation may reach $14.4 million. If he can keep up his present pace, particularly with the bat, the Diamondbacks will be pleased to pay him that much year.
The 25-year-old shortstop has shown significant progress after joining as an international free agent in 2016. What a fantastic turn of events it is for Perdomo to land a good contract that will provide him with financial stability for at least the next six months.
Geraldo Perdomo's new Diamondbacks contract's terms.
More information about Geraldo Perdomo's new deal with the Diamondbacks can be found by reading the New York Post's Jon Heyman. With his new contract, Perdomo got a $5 million signing bonus. From 2026 to 2029, his contract will increase from $5 million to $8 million to $11 million to $13 million. With a $3 million buyout, the club option for 2030 will be valued at $15 million.
However, Perdomo is unlikely to make it to the escalators in his contract. If he wins MVP, his base pay will rise by $5 million from 2028 to 2030; if he finishes second to fifth in the vote, it will climb by $2.5 million; and if he finishes sixth to tenth, it will increase by $1.5 million.
