MLB Trade Rumors: Blue Jays will fight to keep Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. might be coveted by the New York Mets. That does not, however, imply that the Blue Jays will give up their first baseman to the Mets.
The Blue Jays are reportedly "actively negotiating an extension" with Guerrero, according to Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith. Additionally, Nicholson-Smith conjectured that the rumors of a deal involving Guerrero and the Mets might be only an effort to increase the team's influence over free agent first baseman Pete Alonso.
This report does not imply that the conversations have changed in any way. According to reports, Guerrero had threatened to leave the Blue Jays for free agency unless a contract was signed before spring training.
Despite the fact that discussion channels are still open, the two parties were not close to reaching an agreement at the end of December.
Guerrero is now among the major leagues' top first basemen. With 30 home runs and 44 doubles in his 697 plate appearances, the four-time All-Star recorded a batting line of.323/.396/.544. At just 25 years old, he is undoubtedly the most crucial member of the Blue Jays lineup and is expected to be a mainstay for many years to come.
The Blue Jays might see improvements in other areas if Guerrero signs a deal. In previous years, the Blue Jays have been at the top of the free agent market, but they haven't been able to entice those players to Toronto. That cause might benefit from keeping Guerrero on a long-term contract.
Similarly, the Blue Jays may be feigning this news. Even though the Blue Jays would like to keep Guerrero, a deal might not be possible. As they try to replenish, the Blue Jays might increase the Mets' return by raising the price.
