MLB Trade Rumors: New York Yankees star Giancarlo Stanton to begin season on injured list
The New York Yankees are hoping to wrap up their tale in 2025 after an outstanding but ultimately disappointing 2024 season. The objective? to win the 28th World Series for the franchise. Regretfully, things became a little more difficult for the Yankees. The Bronx Bombers' veteran designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton will begin the season on the injured list, according to Yankees beat reporter Bryan Hoch on X (previously Twitter).
Hoch wrote on the social media site, "The Yankees announced that Giancarlo Stanton is still in New York attending to a personal matter." He will start the season on the disabled list after receiving PRP injections in both elbows. This coming week, the team anticipates his return to Tampa.
The Yanks wanted Stanton back at full vigor after losing star Juan Soto to the rival New York Mets in free agency. During last year's postseason, the world witnessed what he could accomplish when he was fully locked. Will that hitter return to the Bombers? Or will Stanton go back to his old ways? His ability to recover from this injury will be crucial to New York's postseason prospects.
Giancarlo Stanton of the Yankees has been injured once more.
Following Soto's departure, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and his staff decided to improve the team's run prevention. Thus, the emphasis was on improving pitching and defense.
Through free agency, Cashman and his lieutenants added two past MVPs to the lineup: former St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and outfielder Cody Bellinger, who was acquired from the Chicago Cubs. By acquiring emerging pitcher Fernando Cruz from the Cincinnati Reds and All-Star closer Devin Williams from the Milwaukee Brewers, they also strengthened their bullpen.
The most significant move of all? Max Fried, an All-Star starting pitcher, was signed to a $218 million, eight-year contract. If Soto comes back, that deal probably doesn't happen. But now that Stanton is gone, Soto's exit hurts a little more. The Bombers are counting on a return to previous performance because Bellinger and Goldschmidt are no longer the MVPs they once were. Can Soto's loss and the (ideally) brief loss of Stanton be made up for by the two veterans and the addition of star prospect Jasson Dominguez to the starting lineup? That's what Yankees supporters hope the three will be able to accomplish.
