MLB Trade Rumors: Mets gave Pete Alonso an enticing contract offer.
Although the New York Mets were long favored to sign Pete Alonso, the player-team negotiations have since soured. The Mets can at least claim to have made a good attempt if Alonso decides to sign with another team.
According to reports, Alonso received an offer from New York for a three-year deal of $68–70 million. The Mets viewed the offer as a "last ditch effort." According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the team also started to lose faith of Alonso's comeback after he declined.
Instead, they agreed to a one-year contract to rejoin Jesse Winker. Alonso's time with the Mets seems to be over, though both sides may alter their minds.
Since the release of his most recent contract announcement, he has already been connected to the Toronto Blue Jays.
Alonso will finish his career with a.249 batting average, 226 home runs, and 586 RBI if he does really leave the Mets. He was selected to four All-Star games and won the 2019 NL Rookie of the Year award. Alonso also won two Home Run Derby championships.
Although his bat will undoubtedly be missed at Citi Field, the Mets have a backup in case this scenario materializes. In 2024, Mark Vientos made his debut as a rookie, batting.Over 111 games, 266 with 27 home runs and 71 RBI. After that, he hit.327 with five home runs and 14 RBI during his postseason heyday.
The Mets will have to assess their hot corner scenario if Vientos switches to first base. Brett Baty, a prospect, is now expected to fill the role. However, New York might decide to acquire a seasoned third baseman with part of the money they would save by not paying Alonso.
That and Pete Alonso's future are still up in the air. However, despite the Mets' finest offer, he turned it down. Alonso would have to make a significant change to return to New York.
