MLB Trade Rumors: New York Mets Rumors: Insider Weighs In on Pete Alonso's Hot Start and Contract Outlook

Pete Alonso is fueling the Mets’ early-season surge — and raising contract speculation in the process.

After an offseason spent fine-tuning his swing mechanics, New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso is off to a blistering start. The power-hitting first baseman is batting .333 with six home runs, playing a key role in the Mets’ impressive 19–8 record as they prepare for a Sunday matchup against the Nationals.

Alonso’s revamped approach at the plate appears to be paying off — and it’s catching the attention of scouts and insiders around the league.

“There will be some regression, of course,” one MLB scout told The Athletic. “But if he has the kind of season it looks like he may have, it was a great strategy on his part to have the player option for Year 2, and I would think there would be some teams lining up for three or four years.”

Alonso signed a two-year contract with the Mets before the 2025 season, which includes a player option for the second year. It was a major win for New York to retain Alonso, especially after the club made headlines by signing superstar outfielder Juan Soto in the offseason.

While Alonso hasn’t shared many details about the exact changes he made, it's believed that he focused on improving how consistently he finds the “sweet spot” of the bat. That enhanced bat-to-ball connection has been a visible difference-maker.

“He is locked in, playing free and without care,” said a National League scout. “But it’s still a tough bet overall on this bat profile per historic comps. It could work out well for Pete being back with the Mets.”

A Key Piece in a World Series Push

With championship aspirations, the Mets are hoping their revamped lineup — led by Soto and a locked-in Alonso — can help them take the next step after falling just short in 2024. They reached the National League Championship Series last season, where they were eliminated by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

This year, they look like a serious contender to win the NL. Alonso has had multiple-hit games regularly, and the Mets recently went on a seven-game winning streak, sparked in part by his offensive consistency.

“It would be hard to overlook the changes that he has made if he’s able to keep this up for an entire season,” a scout added.

Alonso’s long-term future with the team remains an open question. But if he continues his current trajectory, the Mets may not be the only club eager to lock him in for years to come.
