Will Chicago Cubs trade for Nolan Arenado from St. Louis Cardinals?

MLB Trade Rumors: St. Louis Cardinals really trade Nolan Arenado to the Chicago Cubs?

As at the time of writing, Nolan Arenado, the third baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals, has not been traded despite trade rumors circulating throughout the winter.  The 33-year-old third baseman was previously linked to the Boston Red Sox, Houston Astros, and New York Yankees.  But may the Chicago Cubs try to get Arenado?

The Astros didn't appeal to Arenado.  The Yankees are still connected to him, but it doesn't appear that a trade is ever going to happen.  Prior to the addition of Alex Bregman, Boston was possibly the favorite.  Rumor has it that Arenado will stay with the Cardinals after Bregman joined with the Red Sox.

However, the Cubs were recently named by ESPN's Buster Olney as a potential candidate.

Olney stated in a recent ESPN piece, "It's obvious that the Cubs know they can do more and that they need more, which is why they chased Alex Bregman, and ownership has been taking criticism for not investing more in trying to take down a very winnable division."  "The Cubs would appear to have the flexibility to do something if a player becomes available—perhaps Nolan Arenado?—because the payroll has fallen below $200 million, right in the middle of the 30-team landscape."

Will Nolan Arenado be traded to the Chicago Cubs?
Before Bregman joined the Red Sox, the Cubs reportedly made an attempt to sign him. Numerous players have been connected to them through trades and free agency. Although Chicago was successful in acquiring Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros, it appears that they are interested in acquiring even more elite players.

The fact that both Chicago and St. Louis are in the National League Central is one factor to take into account in a potential Cubs-Cardinals Arenado trade. The Cardinals might be reluctant to make a deal with the Cubs because they have one of the most prominent rivalries in the league.

Nonetheless, one has to think that St. Louis will at least pay attention if Chicago makes a compelling enough offer.
