MLB Trade Rumors: Alex Bregman signs a three-year, $120 million contract with the Boston Red Sox.
Jon Heyman recently confirmed that Alex Bregman will be joining the Boston Red Sox on a three-year, $120 million contract with two opt-out options, ending weeks of speculation over where Bregman would end up in free agency.
Since Bregman has only ever played professionally with the Houston Astros, you can expect that you will see him play for a different team. However, Boston has been connected to him during the free agency process, and it's obvious that the Red Sox weren't going to start spring training without a big fish on their roster after many of the top names were taken off the market during the winter.
Bregman, who made his Major League Baseball debut in 2016, played a key role in the Astros' recent success. He was selected to two All-Star teams, made the second team All-MLB, and won a Silver Slugger and later a Gold Glove while leading the team to two World Series victories. Bregman, who was selected second overall in the 2015 MLB Draft, ended his career with 1,132 hits, 191 home runs, and 663 RBIs while showcasing his ability to be a vital two-way player for Houston.
He joins the Red Sox, who, in addition to Trevor Story and Rafael Devers, could use another infield standout.
Boston is hopeful Bregman can be the kind of all-around player who can make big plays on the field and at the plate. But it's still unclear where he will play.
Bregman has played third base for the Astros for most of his career. Nevertheless, Devers lives there.
At this stage of their careers, Devers is a far better player, younger, and under a bigger contract. The former Astro has, however, stated that he is prepared to move around the diamond if necessary.
In an attempt to make a comeback to the World Series, Boston seems to be making a major impression.
Garret Crochet, possibly the most sought-after arm on the trade market this off-season, was already acquired by the Red Sox. They also added Aroldis Chapman and Liam Hendriks as relievers.
But there were a number of reasons why this action made sense. Bregman is forever.375 hits including seven home runs in 21 games at Fenway Park.
Bregman is getting a lot of money, but if an opt-out is used, he might just become a rental player. However, supporters will be happy to have a two-time World Series winner on their roster going into the spring after witnessing players like Blake Snell, Roki Sasaki, and Juan Soto all find new homes outside of New England.
