MLB Rumors: The Toronto Blue Jays are expected to pay $13 million to sign a New York Mets standout.
The Toronto Blue Jays are one team that is still in need of additional starting pitchers.
The Blue Jays' potential target has been the subject of recent rumors. Toronto has announced its first offseason blockbuster acquisition, and it still has money to spend. Anthony Santander, a former star of the Baltimore Orioles, agreed to a five-year, $92.5 million contract with the Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays have been connected in some way to almost every well-known player and don't appear to be finished yet. The pitchers and catchers will report to Spring Training in a few weeks. Before then, the Blue Jays would be wise to add one more starter.
According to Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball, the Blue Jays will do this by agreeing to a one-year, $13 million contract with veteran starting pitcher José Quintana.
"Contract Prediction: One-year, $13 million," stated Finkelstein. "Team Prediction: Blue Jays of Toronto...With a 7.20 ERA in five starts in May and a 5.63 ERA in six appearances in August of last year, the 35-year-old appeared to be suffering from the effects of fatherhood. Nevertheless, Quintana always recovered from difficult times with outstanding ones.
"Since the Blue Jays can use some more pitching, and seem to be in line to spend, they make logical sense as a landing spot for Quintana."
Quintana was excellent for the New York Mets last season, and the Blue Jays need more pitching. He had a 3.75 ERA and made 31 starts for the Mets in the previous season. Since 2021, he has not recorded an ERA higher than that.
He was a former All-Star, is trustworthy, and probably won't cost a lot of money. Such a contract appears to be entirely reasonable. Even though it's only a theory, the Blue Jays ought to take it into account.
