MLB Trade Rumors: Nolan Arenado of the St. Louis Cardinals reveals the no-trade clause during spring training.
In the midst of a trade-rumor-filled offseason, St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado officially reported to spring training on Sunday. Despite trade speculations, the Cardinals still rely heavily on the eight-time All-Star and ten-time Gold Glover.
Arenado, 33, is in charge of any possible move because he has a complete no-trade clause. The Cardinals reportedly held trade negotiations with multiple teams, but no agreement was reached. Arenado acknowledged that he gave a list of perhaps five or six teams he would like to play for, but in the end, he chose not to waive his no-trade rights.
There were roughly five teams, Arenado informed the media, but he would not discuss the identities of the teams because it is no longer important. "I have a family now, so it must be worthwhile for me to be willing to pack them up and relocate them.
As a result, the list was really short, and I don't think I'll ever make any changes to it.
The Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Angels, Philadelphia Phillies, and New York Mets were among the teams that were reportedly interested in Arenado.
But Arenado's trade options were much more limited when the Astros chose Christian Walker and the Red Sox signed Alex Bregman.
The Colorado Rockies will pay the remaining $5 million of the $51 million they pledged to pay when Arenado was transferred to St. Louis in 2021, making up the remaining $74 million over the following three seasons.
Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak has stated that Arenado is still a vital member of the organization in spite of trade rumors.
