MLB Trade Rumors: In response to Houston Astros interest, Jorge Polanco consents to the Seattle Mariners' return.
Jorge Polanco, a seasoned infielder, has no plans to leave. MLB insider Mark Feinsand claims that Polanco has agreed to a new contract with the Seattle Mariners.
Feinsand posted on X on Thursday night, saying, "Sources tell me and @brianmctaggart that Jorge Polanco has agreed to a deal to return to the Mariners, pending physical." Feinsand added that the "plan is for Polanco to play third base for Seattle, per source" in a another post.
The Houston Astros reportedly expressed interest in Polanco, but he decided to remain with the Mariners.
As of this writing, the Mariners have not formally disclosed the terms of his new contract; however, source Brian Murphy of MLB.com reports that the agreement is "expected to guarantee him $7.75 million with a $7 million base salary for 2025 plus a $750K buyout on a player/mutual option for 2026."
After being traded from the Minnesota Twins, with whom he played for for his first ten seasons in the major leagues, starting in 2014, Polanco came in Seattle in January 2024.
According to Spotrac, the Twins received Darren Bowen, Justin Topa, Anthony DeSclafani, Gabriel Gonzalez, and $8 million in cash in exchange. In November, Polanco's $12 million club option for the 2025 MLB season was turned down by the Mariners.
Perhaps the surgery he had in his left knee before the 2024 season can partly explain his struggles during his first year with the Mariners. Nevertheless, he's back with Seattle, which posted just a team wOBA of .303 and a wRC+ of 104, per FanGraphs.
The Mariners have missed the playoffs in the last two seasons after winning just 85 games in 2024 and will be aiming to snap the postseason drought in the coming 2025 campaign.
